Using RideShare
A RideShare or carpool consists of two or more people sharing a ride in a vehicle to travel to a common destination. RideShares may involve one person who does all the driving, with riders volunteering to pay for a share of fuel and maintenance costs. Drivers can also rotate with any kind of mutually acceptable cost sharing agreement.
It is hoped that through the use of this site residents of Denman, Hornby and beyond will find a friendly, safe, economical means to travel either short distances on island or longer travels to larger centers. Folks from the Comox Valley are welcome to join in offering and seeking rides to locations on Vancouver Island and on the mainland.
Adding Rides:
Users of this site may be either offering a ride in their own vehicle or else looking for a ride in someone else's vehicle. Add a Ride enables you to add a RideShare posting for either of these situations.
- Choose Add Journey if you are planning an overnight or longer trip. It is up to you whether the RideShare is one way or return, whether you share the driving and/or expenses and how many travelers are in the group. These details should be worked out before you embark on your trip.
- Choose Add Local Trip if you want to arrange a carpool to work or school, share driving for weekly or monthly shopping trips or arrange a day trip for special events or recreational activities.
Filling out the Form:
- Indicate the Ride Type - are you a driver looking for passengers, or are you seeking a ride?
- Make sure to fill in the required fields (indicated on the form by a *).
- It is not necessary to list your full name or your phone number if you are uncomfortable about posting that information on the site.
- Your email address will be kept private and will not be displayed on the website or given to anyone, but it is required to enable inquiries to be forwarded to you.
- Use the Trip Information field to add any other relevant information, such as details about the number of passengers or amount of cargo space available.
Viewing Rides:
Ride postings will include people who are looking for a ride as well as those who are offering a ride in their own vehicle. View Rides enables you to see the current ride postings.
- Choose View Local Trips to see ride offerings for local destinations and day trips.
- Choose View Journey to see one time trips of longer duration or longer distances.
Ride postings can be sorted by clicking on any of the underlined column headings. For example, click on Destination to find all rides going to a particular place.
To see all the details about a particular ride, click on the person's Name, which is a link to the Trip Details page.
Updating or Deleting Rides:
A Ride posting can be updated or deleted by the person who created it. If your posting is out of date or you no longer wish to receive emails, you should delete your ride from the system:
- Click on the Name field link to go to the Trip Details page.
- Enter the same email address that you used when you created your ride posting.
- Click on Edit or Delete this posting.
- Click the Delete button to delete the posting, or make your changes and click the Add button at the bottom of the form to update the posting.
Cost Sharing:
If you are a passenger, you should be prepared to share traveling costs, including purchasing your own ferry tickets and contributing a portion of vehicle ferry charges, fuel costs and operating expenses. This should be arranged before a ride is accepted.
If you are a driver, be clear about what you expect passengers to contribute before agreeing to RideShare. It is reasonable to expect passengers to share in expenses, but the RideShare website is not intended to facilitate profit making ventures.
